#8 Consentful Interface: Experimental Camera 2.0

!!!Warning!!!

1. This sketch works way better in Firefox than in Chrome or any other browser for me. You may need to run this page in a different browser

2. Results are best when you're not too close to the lense and the entire upper half of your body is visible

Design Process

For my consentful interface I knew that I wanted it to fit in with the sketches overall aesthetic. Since the primary function of the sketch was to function as a camera, I thought it would be best for that to be hinted at while the user was prompted for their consent. The user being able to see what's being captured by the lens while they're making the decision to allow it or not is a very effective way, in my opinion, to help them understand what they're agreeing to.

With that idea in mind I chose to make the interface very simple and straighforward. It actually is designed to be as unobtrusive as possible in order to keep the attention on everything happening within the camera. Additionally the buttons are very plain but react to the hover of the mouse so the user is more aware of what they are about to click. If they decline, another scene is initialized where the camera feed is removed and they only have the option to end the sketch or go back to the intiial consent message. On the other hand, if they choose "more info" they are taken to a completely different page on a different website that explains in furhter detail what it means for a use to allow their camera to shoot or record them. Finally, if they choose accept, they gain access to the experimetnal camera's main features. The side filters have also been updated.

Reflection

My updated interface design responds to F.R.I.E.S. by being more imformative about what is actually taking place underneath the hood of the sketch. It is also being specific, for the most part, about the managing camera and microphone permissions by giving the user access to documentation that covers the topic. There are many more ways to make applications more consentful and they all should be taken into consideration as different interfaces may require different types of acceptance.
